WPM calculator, explained

Words-per-minute sounds simple, but the way it's actually calculated surprises most people. Here's exactly what the number means.

The 5-character word rule

A "word" in every serious typing test is standardized to 5 characters, including the space after it. So "hello " counts as one word, and so does "abcde ". This keeps scores comparable across passages with wildly different actual word lengths.

WPM = (correct characters typed / 5) ÷ minutes elapsed

Raw WPM vs Net WPM

Raw WPM counts every character you type, including mistakes. It shows your finger speed. Net WPM subtracts errors, giving your effective usable speed. Employers and certifications care about net WPM.

Net WPM = Raw WPM − (errors ÷ minutes)

A worked example

You type 300 correct characters in 60 seconds with 5 errors. Raw WPM = 300 ÷ 5 ÷ 1 = 60. Net WPM = 60 − 5 = 55. Accuracy = 300 ÷ 305 ≈ 98.4%.
